8-2-2017 - Sensory Suite Opened!
We are delighted to announce that the newly refurbished Sensory Suite is now open. The existing suite had become out-dated and much of the equipment was no longer supported or financially viable to maintain.
We were delighted to learn last year that the Frimley based company, SC Johnson supported the refurbishment, with a donation of £19,765. This fantastic amount has paid for a new illuminated ball pool, tubes, water bed, therapy chair, LED projectors, sound system and padding.
Its just brillaint that our clients and community users are able to have such a wonderful and comfortable facility, which is what matters!

15-10-2015 - DEPUTY MANAGER VACANCY
10-8-2015 - SENIOR SUPPORT WORKER NEEDED
9-7-2015 - Barclays Parkside Challenge
On Wednesday 8th July we were lucky enough to secure the services of 9 members of staff from Barclays at our Garden project in Gillian Avenue. The garden has been rather taken over by some extremely invasive weeds and in some areas it was hard to see some of the lovely plants below. The poly tunnel was dug over and all the brambles cleared, benches painted all in all the Garden looked lovely- Thank you all!
2-7-2015 - Brilliant Volunteering Day
Today we had a magnificent team from Telereal Trillium who kindly came along and helped with prepping jobs for the Summer Fete. They filled cups with sand, ticketed soft toys, put up bunting, wrapped sweets, made up prizes, delivered leaflets and sorted out a shed load of old Gazebo parts to make up two for the Fete. We are very grateful for their support and to Michelle Davies whose knitting and baking skills have long been admired at Parkside, the beautifully knitted pig is going to be a lucky win for someone.
28-5-2015 - Gardener Wanted!
We have a lovley garden in Aldershot which is used for our Garden groups. We are keen to attract a gardener who might like to volunteer in helping us stay on top of the various areas of the garden. We have a decent size poly-tunnel, water features, vegetable and general garden areas that need some TLC. If you are interested we would love to hear from you call: 01252 313103 and ask for Jackie Carr
26-5-2015 - Break-in at Parkside Café
We were shocked to discover that our lovely community Café was broken into we believe either late Friday or early Saturday 15/16th May. The break-in was discovered late Saturday morning by one of the clients who is on the work experience programme at the Café. The Police were alerted and a Scenes of Crime Officer was called from Winchester.
Ted Parker the Chairman of Parkside attended the scene Saturday and said “ the Police have been thorough in looking over the crime scene and advised us this was not an opportunist but someone who had deliberately targeted our Café. There was only a small float of money taken but I think it was the theft of the collection box which was particularly awful. As a charity we rely on the public’s generosity and we have some lovely support here in Aldershot, so for someone to do this is just awful”
Suzanne Watkins the Support Services Manager who also attended the scene on Saturday said “ this is really awful our clients who gain valuable work experience on this scheme are very shocked which in itself is very sad. We have had to close the Café this weekend so those clients have also lost their Café time which they love and we will lose more money. The fact the weather is nice means we will be unable to provide the families in the park with our service which we pride ourselves on. A lot of people have been affected by this crime”
Should anyone know anything we would urge them to contact the local Police the crime reference is 398. The collection boxes for Parkside are a distinctive red with the Parkside Tree logo on it.
- THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARKSIDE CAFE USERS WHO STARTED A NEW COLLECTION BOX SATURDAY 23RD MAY AND RAISED £45.63 AND TO THE OTHER DONORS WHO RASIED A FURTHER £92, FANTASTIC!

9-12-2014 - Christmas Fair
Christmas Magic at Parkside
This years Christmas Fair was a real delight and very well attended by our wonderful supporters and clients. It was a very cold day but the crowds in the hall soon warmed everyone up. The event was made more special by the volunteers from the Aldershot Baptist church who sang a fantastic array of Carols ably assisted by our very own Nicky Parker. Our thanks are also extended to the lovely Barclays Bank volunteers who helped us on the day. This was very much appreciated and they certainly earnt their mince pie! Thank you also to the lovely Jim Goodman for his support of Parkside and his beautiful wooden items. To Jean Bell and Michelle Davies for not only contributing but helping out too! Thank you to all the cake bakers and volunteers it was a brilliant event!
24-11-2014 - Christmas Craft Day with FIL
It was all hands to the deck as Parkside (Aldershot and District Learning Disability) welcomed a team of volunteers from FIL Farnborough International Ltd. The team spent a day at Parkside as part of their volunteering activities and this proved extremely beneficial as Parkside who help over 300 people with learning disabilities embark on a range of Christmas activities.
The team worked tirelessly throughout the day from making mince pies, to cutting out scenery for the pantomime, being staged by the Parkside clients affectionately known as Parkside Players. The volunteering team brought a beautiful Christmas swag with lights that now adorns the stage area alongside some interesting silhouette artwork displayed within the hall. The staff from FIL finished the day with some lovely feedback Megan said “it was a great day, great experience everyone should give something back.” Rachel said she loved “meeting new people.” Jeegar said “ haven’t laughed so much in a long time.”
Suzanne Watkins the Service Support Manager said “the day was absolutely wonderful and the staff from FIL really came prepared to make the most of their day. The clients loved having them and all the activities were busy with everyone joining in. We made many mince pies which we will be enjoying at our Christmas Fair, most of all without the kindness of the business community it would be difficult for us to create a lot of the opportunities that we do for our clients”

12-8-2014 - The Challenge at Parkside
Thirteen willing 16 year olds who have signed up for the NCS ‘The Challenge‘ visited Parkside as part of their Citizen programme. The group had made a previous visit to us to find out what Parkside does in the community and how they could help. The first visit offered them an opportunity to see the garden project followed by a visit to the main Parkside Centre. They were shown the impressive Sensory Suite and Suzanne Watkins then explained how the equipment helped the clients using the suite. They also visited the Parkside Café and met with clients from the PIP+ group. This group was set up to meet the needs of our older adults with learning difficulties who now sadly have dementia. All this gave them much to think about, as part of their challenge is to create and implement a fundraising campaign for Parkside.
The following week the group spent a day painting the fences at Gillian Avenue, this was a very useful exercise as it does help with our maintenance costs. Rachael Tucker a Senior Mentor from NCS said “ they really gained an insight into what Parkside does and the difficulties that people encounter with learning difficulties. These visits will really help them understand their fundraising challenge and they are all looking forward to it” They will be reporting back in October on how well they did with their campaign, so we look forward to hearing from them.

4-8-2014 - Volunteering in the Sunshine
Not even the sun could stop a group of willing volunteers from the Barclays Mortgage Advisory Team (4 Counties) from helping the charity Parkside (Aldershot & District Learning Disability). As the sun shone down with intensity the 2 groups laboured away at 2 different venues.
The first group worked tirelessly at Parkside in Guildford Rd on outside maintenance the fences were treated the metal poles around the front doors and signs were repainted. The weeds and leaves cleared leaving the front of the property looking refreshed. Andrea Harland who led the group said “the team are always keen to volunteer in the community and we were delighted to be able to help Parkside today, we came prepared and had plenty of sun screen and water!”
The other group were tasked with chopping up an old concrete driveway that leads up to the garden. Over the years this has cracked and become uneven making it difficult for those with mobility problems to access the garden easily. With the kind generosity of Barclays they were able to relay a new surface. The team toiled for the whole morning clearing the site ready for the concrete. Ted Parker Chair of Trustees at Parkside said “both our locations require on-going maintenance and the kindness of volunteers like those today from Barclays means we can keep maintenance costs to a minimum. It also offers our clients the opportunity to work alongside people from different industries”
4-8-2014 - Kermit in Wonderland
A fantastic production was played out by the clients that attend Parkside (Aldershot and District Learning disability). The show titled ‘Kermit in Wonderland’ was produced by the Music Therapy group who meet weekly to enjoy music in all forms. The clients chose their songs and even created a piece of music using special equipment that enables everyone the opportunity to produce a unique sound.
Diane Byrne who leads the music group and also used her sign language skills to narrate the show said “all the music was chosen by the clients who particularly like Abba songs and Doctor Who music. I am delighted by the final production and all the hard work everyone has put in. Over the years of producing these wonderful shows I have seen the generosity people have shown and we have been able to purchase additional equipment for everyone to enjoy”

21-10-2013 - Paul's adventure in Nepal ends
Paul Baker and his dad Ken arrived back from their trek in Nepal on 13th October.
Paul succeeded in climbing to 9000 feet, over half the height to Pang Pema. This was the most difficult and strenuous part of the climb.
There was often a sheer drop at the side of the narrow track and Paul had to cross waterfalls, gullies or valleys that flowed into the river below.
Paul had been going really well but unfortunately began to exhibit the symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and had to be taken off the mountain by helicopter - quite an adventure in itself!
There are many seasoned ramblers who could not have coped with the conditions, so well done to Paul for his bravery and determination to climb as far as he did.
Paul managed to reduce his weight to 15 stone, 12.75 lbs, a weight loss of nearly 17 lbs.
You can read a full report on his trek here: http://www.parksidealdershot.co.uk/additionalnews.php
Thank you to everyone who has sponsored Paul, please now get in touch with Parkside at email@example.com or by post to: Parkside, Guildford Road, Aldershot, Hants GU12 4BP for the attention of their Development Manager to make payments. If you pay income tax, please indicate if you would like us to Gift Aid your donation.
Thank you to everyone who has already donated.

Carly (pictured above), Jackie, Peter and Sonia from Parkside's Thursday garden group raised £380 by staying completely quiet for 3 whole hours!
This was quiet a feat, especially for Sonia, who is well known for being the chatterbox of Parkside!
The 'fab four' all had a special T-shirt made so everyone knew what they had achieved.
Our thanks to Val Waldock for supporting our team and helping them achieve their goal.
30-9-2013 - Garden Group success!
Parkside's garden group in Gillian Avenue has been awarded a Silver Gilt for Most Unusual Planted Container at the 2013 Rushmoor in Bloom awards. The group also received 2nd place for the Best Wildlife Patch award.

9-7-2013 - Paul's Trek to Nepal
Paul Baker sponsored trek to Kanchchanjunga Base Camp,
Paul and his dad Ken will be doing this trek in
September/October 2013. This is a remote region of Nepal so they will be camping and will be accompanied by a guide, cook and porters. They will be walking for 5/6 hours most days and the trek will take about 20 days plus any
rest days. The base camp at Pangpema is 5140 metres or16863 feet high, the route goes up and down the lowest point being about 1000 metres or 3280 feet.
Paul is hoping to raise funds for Parkside (Aldershot and
District Mencap) by means of a sponsored weight loss or alternatively by the highest point achieved on the trek.
Paul is 48 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall is currently
overweight at 18 stone and hopes to get down nearer his target weight of 14 stone.
Paul and his dad will complete as much of the trek as possible, hopefully the complete circuit.
Paul is a member of NE Hants ramblers and with his dad has led the Christmas walk and lunch for the past few years.
If you would like to sponsor Paul please copy this form and send it to Parkside by email or post
Parkside (Aldershot and District Mencap), Guildford Road,

Alternatively/or as well
I will donate £……p….. for each 1000 feet climbed overall to the nearest 1000 (i.e. 17,000 if Paul reaches his objective of the base camp at Pangpema).

21-3-2013 - B and Q and Wrigley's Donate!
Parkside Attract Support from National Companies
We are very proud that we have the continued support of two well known companies, Wrigley's and B and Q.
Karen Creeth, Parkside's Development Manager, collected a huge trolley of goods from B and Q Farnborough last week. Included in the donation were gorgeous throws and cushions for our "chill out" area at Parkside and items for the Gardening project and for use in our Rushmoor in Bloom entries this year.
Wrigley's are supporting our fundraising this year with donations of sweets which will be prizes at the Tea Party on 12th April and the Fun Day on 23rd June.
We are very pleased that these organisations recognise the value of the work that we do.
If you would like to support us through gifts, donations or by volunteering or sponsoring a group, please contact Karen on 01252 313103 or by email (firstname.lastname@example.org)

13-2-2013 - Parkside AGM & Teen Zone Show
Tuesday 5th March 2013
Parkside Teen Zone Club and the Parkside Executive Committee cordially invite you to the 2013 Teen Zone Talent Show and AGM.
2012 (our 50th Anniversary year) was a very exciting time for Parkside. 2013 is set to be equally exciting as we have identified many development opportunities which will expand our current projects and add some new ones.
We are very keen to ensure that all our developments reflect the needs of local people with learning disability and we do hope that you are able to join in that discussion?
During the evening Members of Teen Zone have been invited to showcase their talents. We are very proud of their achievements and very pleased to be able to demonstrate the value of the services we offer to adults and children with learning disabilites via this performance.
As an independent local charity, a key part of the future needs to be the development of our management team, particularly our Executive Committee. The Executive meets every 6 weeks and have responsibility for the governance of Parkside. This covers key areas such as Finance, Personnel, Service Delivery, Health and Safety, Development and Planning.
This is a fundamental and vital voluntary role within a thriving local charity offering you the chance to influence the services provided for adults and children with learning disabilty.
If you are interested in standing for the Executive Committee, please contact Ted Parker by Tuesday 25th February 2013. Alternatively you can complete the form via our website www.parksidealdershot.co.uk or contact us via the Parkside office on 01252 313103.
Hope to see you on March 5th 2013. Refreshments will be provided.
21-1-2013 - GARDEN LOG CABIN OPEN!
Parkside's Log Cabin at our garden in Gillian Avenue was officially opened last Thursday by Len and Peg Hale, long time supporters of Parkside. We were joined at the party by ex Mayor and good friend of Parkside, Alex Crawford, and by Alison Miller and Cathy Fell of BAE Systems. The Cabin was purchased thanks to a donation from BAE Systems and fundraising by Peter Taylor and Jackie Sewell of the Tuesday Garden group.
16-1-2013 - Adult Summer Scheme
Many of you will be aware that the PIP Scheme, our adult day service, currently closes for four weeks during August each year. This is to allow us to run our Childrens Summer Playscheme at Parkside which was set up many years ago before the PIP Scheme began. This clearly causes some difficulty for clients who then do not have any activities to attend during August, for this reason we are looking at how and if we could provide an alternative service.
We are considering the possibility of an Adult Summer Scheme during August, this could be open to anyone with a learning disability not just those who currently access PIP. It would generally be based on 1:3 staffing as with PIP but other arrangements could be made for those who require 1:1 support. We anticipate that the sessions could run from 10a.m to 3p.m and could involve days out and activities which are not generally offered within the regular PIP sessions. Costings have not yet been finalised but are likely to be similar to the current PIP charges.
At this stage we are trying to establish an estimated number of people who would be interested in using this service, this information will help in sourcing an appropriate venue to use as a base and also with considering staffing, transport, charging costs etc.
If you think you may be interested in using this service, would you please register your interest by phoning me on 01252 313103 or 07746044222 or e-mailing email@example.com
By registering an interest you are not committing to use the service but it will give me some guidelines to work with when planning. Please do also make suggestions, requests etc which I will consider when developing the service, as with all our services we are keen to ensure that they are user-led and we welcome input from our clients and carers.
Support Services Manager
